Last update - 08:21 07/02/2008 IDF soldier collapses, dies for unknown reasons at training base By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: IDF, training accidents  An Israel Defense Forces soldier Wednesday collapsed and died at an Israel Air Force base in the Negev, where he was undergoing basic training in his anti-aircraft unit. The soldier lost consciousness while studying the material taught in his course. Army officials said he was not engaged in any physically exerting activity when he died. Officials are examining the possibility that the soldier died as a result of a medical problem that was somehow overlooked during medical examinations before he was recruited. Advertisement The soldier's platoon mates rushed over to him and tried to resuscitate him after he collapsed. Trained paramedics arrived at the scene within minutes, a spokesperson for the IDF said. The soldier was flown by helicopter to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Senior IAF officials gave orders to probe the death and examine the reasons for the incident. The IDF chief surgeon has launched his own inquiry into the case.
