(Daniel Bar On/Jini) Last update - 21:07 06/02/2008 Interior Minister to ultra-Orthodox: Find work and enlist in IDF By Yair Ettinger, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: ultra-Orthodox, Elad  Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit said Tuesday that the ultra-Orthodox population should "find work," enlist in the Israel Defense Forces, and not rely on monetary donations. Sheetrit made the remarks in Elad, an ultra-Orthodox community, at a ceremony recognizing the community as a city. The interior minister even made comments on stage to the ceremony's organizers regarding the separation between the men and women in the audience, even though separation between the sexes is acceptable in all Haredi events. Advertisement Sheetrit's comments spurred embarrassment from the ceremony's audience, which included numerous rabbis and ultra-Orthodox politicians. However, he praised the municipality, saying that "the time has come that we recognize the donations of the residents who have come to live here." Elad, which was established in 1997 southwest of Petah Tikwa, joined Beitar Illit and Modiin Illit as new cities attracting mainly young Hardei couples. An estimated 35,000 people live in the city, whereas 60 percent of them are younger than 18. The head of the community, who became the city's mayor on Tuesday, is Shas party member Tzvika Cohen. Shas head Minister Eli Yishai took advantage of Tuesday's ceremony to call for Cabinet Secretary Oved Yehezkel, who was in attendance, to step up the pace of housing construction in Jerusalem.
