As millions of Americans vote in primaries across the nation, policy statements on the Middle East have been long on promises and short on substance. Differences between the candidates may be more difficult to discern on this issue than any other.

Given the importance of large states in which Jewish voters play a key electoral role, candidates have placed special emphasis on vocal support for Israel.

But if a president is to play a significant role in the forging of a future peace in the Holy Land, he or she will need to be as closely attuned to the aspirations and the bottom lines of the Palestinians.

Who among the current candidates for the U.S. presidency is the most likely to be able to foster a peace between Israelis and Palestinians? What qualities will that candidate need, and what is the chance of success?
