Former Meretz chair Sarid to address Winograd protest on Monday
By Lily Galili, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Israel, Winograd, Ehud Olmert

Yossi Sarid, the former Meretz Party leader, and Yaakov Hasdai, who was a member of the Agranat Commission that investigated the Yom Kippur War, will be among the speakers at Monday's planned demonstration across from the Knesset, scheduled to coincide with a plenum discussion of the Winograd Commission's final report.

Despite polls showing improvement in the prime minister's standing, the protest movement continues to call for Ehud Olmert to resign, and for Labor Party Chairman Ehud Barak to make good on his promise to quit the coalition once the final Winograd report was released. The main slogan at the protest will be: "Look us in the eye when you raise your hand in the Knesset."

Residents of the north and activists from the Labor Party's young guard are also expected to attend the demonstration, which is being organized by the joint protest headquarters set up by army reservists, bereaved parents and the Tafnit movement.

The decision to hold Monday's demonstration came amid a continuing debate over the future of the protest movement, in view of the media and public reactions to the report. It was decided at this stage to keep going at least until the Knesset session, after which the situation will be reassessed.

In the time remaining before the Knesset vote, protesters seek to underscore the gap between the public's view of the Second Lebanon War's failure and the severity of the Winograd report, on one hand, and the media coverage of the report and the celebratory atmosphere in the Prime Minister's Office, on the other.
