(AP) Last update - 11:57 01/02/2008 Report: Meshal says abducted IDF soldier Shalit 'alive and well' By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel, Khaled Meshal, Hamas  Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal said that abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit is "alive and well," in an interview with the Italian weekly Panorama published Friday, Israel Radio reported. The Damascus-based leader told the Italian magazine that Shalit's kidnappers are treating him well, and asked why Israelis worry so much about one soldier when some 12,000 Palestinians are jailed in Israel, including women and children. Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by Palestinian militants during a cross-border raid on his IDF post near the Gaza Strip in June 2006. Advertisement In an audio tape released by Hamas in June 2007, the abducted soldier said his health was deteriorating, and that he would need to be hospitalized for a long period of time. Abu Obeida, a spokesman for the group's military wing, also affirmed in mid-January that Shalit was in a good physical condition. Speaking to Nazareth-based A-Shams radio, Abu Obeida said: "We have no intention of hurting [Shalit], because we know that his release will bring about the release of many Palestinian prisoners." Earlier in January, Meshal also said that IDF raids on Gaza would hurt chances of Hamas releasing Shalit, adding that the army's recent operations in the coastal strip made Hamas less likely to negotiate any truce with Israel.
