Defense Minister Ehud Barak met last week in secret with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, Channel 2 reported Sunday.

According to the report, the officials held two meetings in Paris - the first one brief, and the second one approximately an hour long.

Barak expressed to the Pakistani president his concern over the growing strength of extremist Islamic movements in Pakistan, and said he feared Pakistan's nuclear weapons would fall into the hands of extremists.

Musharaff reportedly told Barak that Pakistan's nuclear arsenal was well guarded.

On Saturday, senior officials in the Pakistani army said that there was no reason to worry that the Taliban or Al-Qaida would take control over Pakistan's nuclear weapons.

Haled Kidawi, the commander of the unit guarding the weapons, said that 10,000 soldiers were hard at work safeguarding the nuclear arsenal and providing intelligence. He added that Pakistan couldn't possibly succumb to extremist aggression.

Meanwhile, the United States on Sunday announced that it was renewing its efforts to combat terror in Pakistan, where the terrorist organization Al-Qaida is gaining strength. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that while the U.S. respects the Pakistani government's right to decide how to fight terror within its own borders, there are reasons for concern that Al-Qaida poses a global threat.
