Arab League chief: Israeli policy is destroying peace process

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa on Thursday accused Israel of taking steps destined toward destroying the peace process, particularly with regard to its policy on West Bank settlements.

In an interview with Haaretz and The Marker at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Moussa said Israel's continued presence in settlements raises doubts about the future of the peace process set forth by the United States.

Moussa said he hoped that U.S. President George Bush's declaration regarding a possible peace agreement by 2009 would turn into an American commitment.

The Arab League chief also expressed pessimism about the negotiations between Israel the Palestinians following the Annapolis Conference, saying none of the subjects discussed at the summit have yet to be put on the negotiating table.

Moussa spoke just a few hours before the commencement of the central discussion of the conference, on the subject of the peace process following Annapolis.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and President Shimon Peres were also attending the conference.
