Livni: Sanctions can bring an end to Iranian nuclear program
By Reuters

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni appealed to international businesses on Thursday to cut business links with Iran in response to the threat she said the Islamic Republic posed to the Middle East.

"Iran is a central threat which undermines moderate regimes. Iran supports terrorism, denies the Holocaust and calls for Israel to be wiped off the map and will do everything to undermine our efforts for peace," Livni said.

"So Iran is a global threat. Iran can be stopped by you," Livni told business leaders and politicians in a speech to the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.

"You can make the change. Tremendous power is gathered in this room," Livni said. "Decide to divest from Iran. That can stop Iran."

Iran is locked in a dispute with world powers over its nuclear program. The West accuses Tehran of seeking nuclear arms but Iran insists its development is for power generation only.

Burns, in Israel, says new Iran resolution will be punitive

U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns arrived in Israel on Thursday, telling reporters that a new United Nations draft resolution against Iran agreed on by major powers would be punitive.

Burns' comments contradicted comments by Russia's foreign minister.

"This resolution will be punitive. I saw some comments from Moscow yesterday saying it will not be punitive. That's not correct. It's a punitive resolution," Burns said, without elaborating on the wording of the draft resolution over Iran's nuclear program.

Ahead of a meeting with Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai in Tel Aviv, Burns said that while Hamas itself was to blame for the shortages of basic goods in the Gaza Strip, it was up to Egypt to restore order at the border, after militants smashed the frontier fence a day earlier.

Burns will meet with officials on Thursday for another round of the dialogue on security ties between the Israel and the U.S., the State Department said in a statement, in talks that are expected to focus in large part on Iran.

"The U.S. and Israeli teams will discuss their assessments of Iran's nuclear program and diplomatic efforts under way to prevent Iran from developing nuclear capability," the State Department said.

The United States and other Western powers fear Iran's nuclear activities are aimed at building nuclear weapons and have already imposed sanctions against Tehran.

Israel believes Iran could have a nuclear bomb by 2010 and says an Iranian atomic weapon would threaten its existence. Iraq denies seeking nuclear weapons and says it is enriching uranium only for use in generating electricity.

The State Department said the U.S.-Israeli talks would also address
concerns over the implementation of a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for the disarmament of Hezbollah and other militias in Lebanon.

The last strategic dialogue between Israel and the United States was held
in November.

Burns flew to the Middle East from Davos, Switzerland, where he attended
the World Economic Forum this week with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Before ending his visit to Israel on Friday, Burns also will meet with
Secretary General of the PLO Executive Committee Yasser Abed Rabbo, the State Department said.
