Shas escalates threat to quit Olmert gov't over Jerusalem talks
By Mazal Mualem, Haaretz Correspondent

Shas is ratcheting up the pressure on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, escalating threats to quit the government in the event Israel and the Palestinians discuss Jerusalem as a subject for peace negotiations.

Party chairman Eli Yishai met with Olmert in Jerusalem, demanding the premier divulge details on the overall goal of negotiations in general, and the status of Jerusalem in particular.

Yishai communicated to Olmert his expectation that the prime minister inform the Shas chair of new developments at all stages of talks between Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and top Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qureia (Abu Ala).

Yishai made clear that Shas will resign from the coalition the moment Israel pursues a policy which entails concessions that the religious party views as "red lines," with a special emphasis placed on Jerusalem, prior to those concessions being offered to the Palestinians in negotiations.

Following his meeting with Olmert, Yishai updated Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who expressed support for Yishai's message to the prime minister.

"Shas will not divide Jerusalem and will not sit in a government that divides Jerusalem," Yosef told Yishai. "I want everone to know this."
