Civilian employed by IDF critically hurt when staircase collapses

A civilian employed by the Israel Defense Forces was critically injured Monday when a staircase collapsed near him at the Nachshon army base near Ma'ale Adumim.

Another person was lightly injured in the collapse.

The two injured had been walking by when the staircase collapsed, burying them underneath the rubble. Magen David Adom paramedics called to the scene gave first aid assistance to the injured, who were initially thought to be in moderate condition.

However, while paramedis treated the injured, one of them lost consciousness.

MDA staff then tried to resuscitate him, transferring him to to Hadassah Ein Karem Hospital in Jerusalem.

This is the fifth IDF accident to occur in the past two months.

An IDF commando died in the beginning of the month in a training accident in the Arava region in southern Israel.

Staff Sergeant Yariv Amitai was killed less than two months ago when his army vehicle overturned near the Gaza border.

Sergeant-Major Asaf Waxman, a 28 year-old reservist from Rishon Letzion, was killed in a training accident in the Golan Heights, exposing serious failures in the training of APV drivers.

In another accident, Private Ma'ayan Rottenberg was killed in an Arava army base while sidling a tank cannon during training.
