Deal to end 3-month prof. strike said close By Haaretz Staff Striking university faculty yesterday accepted Histadrut labor federation chair Ofer Eini's compromise proposal to end the strike. But near midnight it became clear that there are still substantial obstacles to a deal including the distribution of compensation for the professors. Finance Ministry officials would like to see the payments distributed over two years, while the professors want the money immediately. By press time the parties had not reached a deal that would end the strike. Advertisement During the meeting, Finance Ministry budgets director Ram Belinkov and wages director Eli Cohen left to consult with Finance Minister Roni Bar-On and had not announced if they accept the proposal by press time. Eini's compromise is much lower than original faculty demands. One unresolved issue is whether the new contract will include 5 percent raises in exchange for certain recommended reforms. However, unlike previous offers from university heads and the treasury, the Eini deal is not contingent on faculty agreement to the reforms. Bar-On said yesterday afternoon that any agreement will have to serve as a basis for the reforms to be meaningful for the higher education sector.
