Ahmadinejad: 'The Zionist regime' would not dare attack Iran

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday that Israel "would not dare attack Iran", after Israel tested a missile following warnings against Iran's controversial nuclear program.

"The Zionist regime ... would not dare attack Iran" Ahmadinejad told Al Jazeera television in remarks translated into Arabic, referring to Israel. "The Iranian response would make them regret it, and they know this."

Earlier Thursday the Israel Defense Forces successfully tested a missile at a base in Palmachim. "A successful missile launch was carried out within the framework of examining rocket propulsion," the Defense Ministry later said in a brief statement to the media.

Israel Radio said the missile tested was capable of carrying an "unconventional payload," and quoted unidentified foreign reports as saying Israel was developing the Jericho III long-range surface-to-surface missile.

The radio report noted that the IDF has been carrying out tests to improve anti-missile systems aimed at intercepting both short and long-range rockets, including Katyusha rockets used by Hezbollah in Lebanon and missiles in Iran's arsenal.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Monday that Israel would consider "all options" to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Israel is believed to have atomic arms and foreign analysts have said for many years that its Jericho I and Jericho II missiles can carry nuclear warheads, but Jerusalem has never confirmed these claims.

Israel believes Iran could have a nuclear bomb by 2010. However, the oil-rich country denies seeking nuclear weapons and says it is enriching uranium only for use in generating electricity.
