Homeless man found frozen to death in Rishon Letzion
By Yigal Hai, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Homeless, Tel Aviv

A homeless man was found dead Thursday in Rishon Letzion. Police said the man likely froze to death overnight.

Yaniv Shahar, a Magen David Adom paramedic who arrived at the scene, reported that the man, 50, was found "lying on the ground. There were no signs of violence in the incident." A police spokesman confirmed the cause of death "was likely hypothermia."

In the past two days, two homeless persons died as a result of hypothermia - a condition in which body temperature falls below 36 degrees centigrade. Two other men were hospitalized in serious condition.

As a result, the Tel Aviv municipality launched an initiative calling on homeless persons to stay in shelters rather than on the streets.
