State: Bolster Sderot residents, not their homes
By Yuval Yoaz

It is more important to enhance the resilience of Sderot's population than to reinforce their homes, the state told the High Court of Justice yesterday.

The statement, by the State Prosecutor's Office, was made in response to a petition by 30 Sderot residents demanding that the state reinforce 800 private homes in the city against Qassam rockets.

In addition, the statement said, agreeing to carry out the reinforcements could set a "very significicant" precedent, since "other parts of the State of Israel are or are likely in the near future to be threatened by steep-trajectory missiles."

According to state attorney Dina Silber, the government should focus on heightening the "endurance" of area residents, saying that it, "and not reinforcement, is the key concept according to which this issue should be examined. Reinforcement is only one possible element in preparing the home front in all areas of the country that are exposed to missile fire."

On December 23, the cabinet approved funding for an anti-missile system, Iron Dome, and on January 6, it approved an aid program for communities bordering the Gaza Strip.
