FM heads to Moscow for talks on Iran, Middle East peace talks

Iran's nuclear ambitions and Israeli-Palestinian peace talks are expected to top the agenda for Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni who was scheduled to
arrive in Moscow on Wednesday for meetings with her Russian counterpart and top officials.

Livni's trip to Moscow comes as the increasing number of Israel Defense Forces clashes with Palestinian militants is complicating renewed peace talks with Palestinian moderates in the West Bank.

Before her departure, Livni said in a statement that she would seek Russia's support in securing the success of the ambitious negotiations that resumed Monday.

Moscow has proposed hosting the next scheduled conference on the Israeli-Palestinian peace effort.

Livni also said that during her visit she would press for more effective
sanctions against Tehran's nuclear program at the United Nations. Israel, the United States and other Western nations suspect Iran's efforts are aimed at building atomic weapons; Tehran maintains its programs are purely peaceful, intended for generating electricity

Moscow has used its influence as a veto-wielding UN Security Council member to resist sanctions against Tehran. Russia is building Iran's first nuclear reactor and supports what it says is Tehran's right to use atomic energy peacefully.

During meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Livni is also expected to discuss lifting visa restrictions for both Russians and Israelis.

Israel is home to more than a million Jews from Russia and the former Soviet states.
