Yishai to Lieberman: If PM, Abbas discuss J`lem, Shas will quit gov`t

Employment, Trade and Industry Minister Eli Yishai telephoned Minister for Strategic Affairs Avigdor Lieberman on Tuesday to tell him that if Israel negotiates the issue of Jerusalem with the Palestinians, Shas will leave the government immediately, as per Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's instructions.

Yishai, calling from China, also asked Lieberman, who heads the Yisrael Beiteinu political party, if he intends to quit the government and tried to convince him not to do so.

Lieberman met with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Tuesday to discuss the recent diplomatic developments. In past days, Lieberman has threatened to leave the government, mostly due to negotiations with the Palestinians over the core issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - Jerusalem, borders and Palestinian refugees.

Lieberman told Olmert that he had a problem with staying in a government that negotiates the core issues, which he considers to be the red line precipitating his resignation from the cabinet

Olmert told the minister that no actual steps have been taken regarding the core issues, and that they have only been discussed, adding that Lieberman could have a greater influence from within the coalition than in the opposition.

Olmert told his close associates ahead of his meeting with Lieberman that he would promote talks on the core issues, even if it meant he would pay a political price.

Lieberman is expected to call a gathering of the party secretariat on Tuesday evening to discuss Olmert's clarifications and continued membership in the cabinet, and will notify Olmert of his decision on Wednesday, ahead of planned press conference in Jerusalem.
