An eight-year-old Bedouin girl from the Negev died Tuesday as a result of the recent cold spell that has swept Israel in the last several days.

She was transferred to Soroka Medical Center in the afternoon in critical condition, when her body temperature stood at 26 degrees Celsius, or 78.8 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hospital staff attempted to resuscitate the child, but their efforts failed and they were forced to pronounce her death.

Earlier Tuesday, the body of a homeless woman who froze to death was found on a public bench in Bat Yam.

On Sunday, a 36-year-old homeless man and a 78-year-old woman from Be'er Sheva both died of hypothermia.

The identity of the woman found in Bat Yam on Thursday is still unknown, and her body was sent to Abu Kabir Medical Center for an autopsy.

Another homeless man was found suffering from frostbite nearby. He was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The recent cold spell continued Monday night as the temperature dropped to new lows. In the upper Galilee town of Odem, the temperature reached nine degress below Celsius (15 degrees Farenheit).

The Israel Electric Corporation expected the consumption of electricity during the cold front to reach an all-time high.

The electricity demand on Monday afternoon stood at 10,200 megawatts - only 400 megawatts less than the maximal production capability.

The Israel Electric Corporation has warned that if the demand increases, it will need to cut power for small periods of time around the country. The company called on the public to refrain from using "electricity-guzzling" appliances between 5 and 9 P.M.

In addition, the electricity company will enact for the first time an arrangement under which major consumption bodies will receive financial incentives for reducing their activities during peak hours.
