Report: Egypt arrests terror cell planning attacks on Israel

Egypt arrested two terrorists planning to attack targets in Israel, the Qatar-based Arabic language news network Al-Jazeera reported on Sunday.

According to Al-Jazeera, about two months ago, Egyptian security forces arrested two military officers and 12 engineers who were reportedly planning on building an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to use against targets in Israel.

The group reportedly built rockets similar to the Qassam rockets fired by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip.

Security sources told Al-Jazeera reporters in Cairo that the commander of the terrorist cell was an engineer who visited Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates where he is suspected to have met with Al-Qaida terrorists from Afghanistan.

The cell reportedly were driven by an extreme, fundamentalist Islamic ideology under which they feel obligated to carry out attacks against political leaders and citizens.

Typically, Egyptian security forces only report on cases where they have discovered explosives, and typically do not disclose instances where Egyptian citizens were involved in terrorist attacks.
