Several protests held against division of Jerusalem

A protest against the partition of Jerusalem was carried out yesterday by demonstrators, mainly young people, who formed a human chain around the Old City's walls.

"Jerusalem will not forgive anyone who is party to its division, including Minister [Avigdor] Lieberman," said Yechiel Leiter, director of the One Jerusalem organization, which organized the event. Lieberman heads the rightist Yisrael Beiteinu Party.

Leiter added that his organization would soon step up its anti-partition activities.

Yesterday morning, police prevented hundreds of rabbis and supporters from entering the Temple Mount to demonstrate.

In the afternoon, some 1,000 right-wing activists protested in East Jerusalem's Har Homa neighborhood against a construction freeze in the settlements and Jerusalem. At the rally, MK Aryeh Eldad (National Union) urged settlers "to carry out civil disobedience and violate the prime minister's instructions."

"We will tell [Prime Minister Ehud] Olmert: Jews will build everywhere in the Land of Israel," Eldad said. "This is an anti-Zionist, anti-Jewish, immoral order. It is meant to choke off settlement activity in Judea and Samaria."

From Har Homa, trucks laden with construction materials set off for nine outposts in the West Bank.

Though the Ministry of Housing is delaying construction at Har Homa, right-wing activists are planning to build homes in another E. Jerusalem neighborhood, Ma'aleh Hazeitim, located in Ras al-Amud.

Gershon Solomon, chairman of the Temple Mount Faithful, asked Attorney General Menachem Mazuz yesterday to order an investigation against Olmert for "treason," due to the talks with the Palestinians over partitioning Jerusalem.
