A poll by the Web site of the Argentine-based Jewish community newspaper Iton Gadol on Wednesday named President Shimon Peres the "Jewish Personality of 2007."

Peres garnared a clear majority in the vote held by the Spanish-speaking newspaper. Over 1,200 people from Latin-America, Israel and the United States cast their vote, in selecting their favorite candidate from a list proposed by the site's readers.

Other names on the voters' list included the abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit; Adriana Drisud, an Argentine female victim of anti-Semitic attacks in the Argentine city of Rosario; Luis Grynwald, chairman of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA); Alberto Nisman, the prosecutor investigating the 1994 AMIA Bombing in Buenos Aires, and the Argentine writer Juan Gelman.

"The Jewish world realized that the personality of the year came from the State of Israel," Daniel Berliner, Iton Gadol's editor told the news agency Agencia Judía de Noticias (AJN). "I believe that the voters were not wrong in choosing Peres - one of the most important men in history," Berliner added.
