University heads to seek labor court injunction to end strike

The Committee of University Heads asked the National Labor Court on Wednesday to issue a temporary injunction forcing the lecturers to end their strike for two weeks. If the injunction is granted, the university heads plan on implementing it immediately. The court hearing whether to issue the injunction will be on Sunday.

The university presidents made their decision during a meeting that took place on Wednesday. Some of the presidents wavered on whether to implement the injunctions since they it would damage the work relationship between the faculty and management.

The committee's decision comes after National Labor Court president, Judge Steve Adler, said Tuesday that he does not see how he can be of help to the negotiations between the striking university lecturers and the finance ministry.

Adler made the remarks at the end of a hearing at the court between representatives of the striking senior lecturers, university heads, and the finance ministry, convened in an effort to end the university strike, now in its 71st day.

On Monday, the Treasury accepted a compromise proposal presented by Adler in an attempt to renew negotiations between the ministry and the striking university lecturers.

The lecturers rejected Adler's proposal, but agreed to significantly ease their terms by reducing their demand for a salary increase of between 30 and 35 percent to a demand for a 21 percent pay raise.

Representatives of faculty organizations said that the university presidents' request for an injunction constitutes the "crossing of a red line."

"Injunctions and academia are two terms that don't go together. How do you teach Socrates under injunction? How do you teach a course on the right to strike," said Dr. Asher Ben Aryeh, a senior lecturer at the Hebrew University.

According to Professor Ronnie Ellenblum, chair of the senior faculty organization at the Hebrew University, "Nothing useful will come out of injunctions, and the damage will be the loss of trust between the systems in academia."

The National Student Union announced that it would also oppose the issuing of injunctions. "Despite the suffering and the major damage caused to the student body as a result of the lecturers' strike, we won't lend a hand to those who harm democracy in Israel and the freedom to strike," said union chair Itai Shonshein.
