Two UN peacekeepers lightly wounded by roadside blast in Lebanon

Two United Nations peacekeeping soldiers were wounded when a roadside bomb hit their vehicle in south Lebanon on Tuesday, security sources said.

A UN spokesman confirms two peacekeepers were lightly hurt in a roadside explosion 35 kilometers south of Beirut.

The sources said the casualties were Irish. Earlier a security source had identified them as Spanish.

The blast occured as UNIFIL was investigating two Katyusha rockets which were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel early Tuesday.

It was the third attack on the 13,500-strong force known as UNIFIL since it was expanded after a 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah ended in August 2006.

On June 24 last year, three Spanish and three Colombian UN soldiers were killed when a bomb destroyed their armored troop carrier in south Lebanon in the first attack, on June 24 last year.

In July, a roadside bomb exploded near a UNIFIL position, causing no casualties.
