State panel to probe treatment of Holocaust survivors by gov't

The Knesset State Control Committee decided on Monday to establish a state commission of inquiry into the government's treatment of Holocaust survivors.

The committee will be headed by a justice of the High Court.

"Holocaust survivors have had their fill of empty promises. For years their treatment is riddled with failure," Committee chair Zevulun Orlev (NRP) said.

"Forty Holocaust survivors pass away with everyday that passes, without ever receiving what they deserve".

This is the only the second time in history that the State Control Committee has established a state commission of inquiry. The first panel involved the selling of bank stocks in the 1980s.

At a Kadima party meeting Monday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that "every day that goes by without the Holocaust survivors receiving aide is unacceptable."

Olmert added that he assumes that the state commission of inquiry will investigate why past government did not act to assist the survivors.

"We of course will cooperate with the committee," Olmert said.

On Sunday, the government approved the allowance system to Holocaust survivors who should begin receiving their stipends in the upcoming days.
