Dichter: Barghouti has blood on his hands, must stay in prison

Jailed Fatah/Tanzim leader Marwan Barghouti is a murderer with blood on his hands and should remain in prison until his final days, Public Security Minister Avi Dichter said on Sunday during the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.

Dichter denied reports that Ofer Dekel, a negotiator working on behalf of the prime minister on matters of missing and abducted Israelis, had met recently with Barghouti in jail.

"Ofer Dekel never asked Prisons Service to meet with Marwan Barghouti and has not met with him since he [Barghouti] was arrested," Dichter said.

The Prime Minister's Office has also denied the report, which was first published in the Ma'ariv daily.

"Ofer Dekel has not met Barghouti in the last five years," a spokesman from the PMO said.

Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai said Saturday he would be willing to release Israel's most prominent Palestinian prisoner in exchange for captured Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit.

Vilnai became the latest high-ranking official to publicly support releasing Barghouti, despite the government's declared policy of not freeing prisoners involved in attacks on Israelis.

Barghouti, viewed as a potential successor to moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, is serving five consecutive life terms for masterminding the killing of four Israelis and a Greek monk in West Bank attacks. But he is the most popular leader among Palestinians and is widely regarded as the only figure able to unify rival Palestinian factions.

Vilnai noted that Israel has released militants involved in attacks on Israelis in the past, despite its declared policy of not freeing prisoners with blood on their hands.
