Shahar Peer's quest for the singles championship at the Gold Coast tournament in Australia came to a halt Friday, after the 17th ranked Israeli tennis phenom dropped a straight-sets decision in the semi-final round match against Belarus' Victoria Azarenka, 6-2, 6-4.

The 30th ranked Azarenka, who is Peer's doubles partner, was in full control of play throughout the match, needing just 69 minutes to dispatch of the Israeli. In the first set, Azarenka, 18, broke Peer's serve to take a 5-3 lead. After both players opened the second set tied at 2-2, the Belorussian went on to capture four straight games en route to a convincing victory. Azarenka will square off against China's Na Li in the championship round.
