Domestic flights from Tel Aviv, Haifa to stop running on Saturdays
By Zohar Blumenkrantz, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Israel, airlines, airport

As of February 1st there will cease to be domestic flights from Sde Dov Airport in Tel Aviv and the airport in Haifa on Saturdays, the Transportation Ministry announced Tuesday.

The flights will no longer run due to a dispute between the Defense and Transportation ministry over the training and funding of military air traffic supervisors.

The decision is expected to be most damaging to domestic flight companies such as Arkia and Israir airlines, as well as private flight companies since the bulk of these companies business is on the weekends.

Arkia airlines said in response that the "airlines are not directly involved in this issue as it pertains to the relationship between the Airport Authority and the Air Force. If there are no air traffic supervisors during weekends and holidays the airports will be forced to close down on these days. If this were to happen, it would cause difficulties for people who fly from Sde Dov to Eilat. The financial loss to the airlines would also be damaging."
