IDF commando killed in training accident in the Arava desert
By Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: commando, IDF, Sayeret Matkal

An elite Israel Defense Forces soldier died Tuesday in a training accident in the Arava region in southern Israel.

The soldier, Tamir Nabuani, of the Galilee Druze village of Kfar Julis, fell off a cliff during a navigation exercise. He served in the elite Sayeret Matkal commando unit.

The IDF said that the accident occurred while Nabuani was navigating alone during training. For reasons as yet unknown, he tripped and fell from a 15 meter-high cliff.

His body was found some time after the accident, and taken by an Israel Air Force helicopter to hospital in Be'er Sheva.

This is the fourth IDF accident to occur in the past two months.

Staff Sergeant Yariv Amitai was killed less than two months ago when his army vehicle overturned near the Gaza border.

Sergeant-Major Asaf Waxman, a 28 year-old reservist from Rishon Letzion, was killed in a training accident in Ramat Hagolan, which exposed serious failures in the training of APC drivers.

In another accident, Private Ma'ayan Rottenberg was killed in an Arava army base while sidling a tank cannon during training.

Six weeks ago, IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi ordered that all training be stopped for two hours in order to hold safety instruction workshops. IDF officials said that during the past year, training exercises were carried out more frequently, and that the number of casualties from accidents decreased.

In 1992, two soldiers from the Sayeret Matkal unit died from dehydration while training near Eilat.

Five years ago, an IDF soldier died during training after falling into an abyss also as a result of dehydration.
