BRAIN DRAIN: High salaries lure Israel's top academics abroad
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10
Tags: Brain Drain
Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for December 30, 2007.

With more and more of Israel's best academics leaving the country, and university lecturers reaching the 60-day mark in their strike for better conditions, questions are being asked about the state of academia in Israel.

One explanation for the brain drain is the wages offered to lecturers; for many, the prospect of substantially higher salaries abroad has served as an attractive incentive to leave the country.

Today, some 3,000 Israelis hold top staff positions in universities around the world, while just 4,500 senior lecturers are left in Israel.
