Jerusalem theater troupe stages Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Mikado'

Gilbert and Sullivan's popular opera, "The Mikado," opens on New Year's Eve in Jerusalem. Encore! Theatre Company, a new theater troupe, is putting on the show. A comic opera ostensibly set in Japan, the performance is known for its witty satire of Victorian England and bureaucracies around the world. Directed by Robert Binder, cofounder of Encore! and a staple of the capital's Anglo performing arts scene, the opera - in English with Hebrew subtitles - will run through January 10 at Hirsch Theatre in Beit Shmuel. To purchase tickets, contact Bimot at (02) 623-7000. (Daphna Berman)

English writers group releases latest literary journal

The Israel Association of Writers in English published this week its 19th annual issue of "arc," a literary journal. Edited by Mordechai Beck and Jeff Green, the issue features original stories, essays, poetry - all in English - and art and photography. A launch party, featuring prominent Anglo-Israeli writers Karen Alkalay-Gut, Judy Labenson and Jerome Mandel, will he held Thursday in Jerusalem. Additional discussions of "arc" will be held later this month Tmol Shilshom, a Jerusalem cafe, as well as an afternoon session at Tel Aviv University next month. For more information, contact Mordechai Beck at marduk@bezeqint.net. (Daphna Berman)

New Year's goes European

The country may be flat, but the bubbly won't be - at least, not at the European-Style New Year's Eve party organized by the Dutch Forum. The festivities are slated to begin at 10 P.M. on January 31, at Sportsbar across from the Yad Eliyahu Stadium in Tel Aviv. Entrance is NIS 50, and drinks are guaranteed to be comfortably affordable - perhaps as tribute to the Netherlands' strict subsidies plan. To reserve a ticket, send an e-mail to nyp@dutch-forum.com with your name and the number of people attending. (Cnaan Liphshiz)

Diaspora Orthodox rabbis visit to mark Israel's 60th birthday

Some 150 Orthodox rabbis from around the world are in Israel this week for an annual conference of Diaspora communal leaders. The three-day conference, hosted by the World Zionist Organization, has gathered religious leaders from 32 countries, including India, Finland, Macedonia and Malta. The event - which marks Israel's 60th birthday, as well as solidarity with the residents of the South - included a visit to Sderot, meetings with Sephardi Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar and former chief of staff Moshe Ya'alon.
