(Daniel Bar On) del.icio.us Digg It!  new Last update - 09:19 26/12/2007 High Court slams state for not providing Gaza power cuts data By Yuval Yoaz, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: Palestinian Authority  The High Court of Justice assailed the State Prosecutor's Office Tuesday for failing to provide it with data on the government's plans to limit the supply of electricity to the Gaza Strip. "The fact that the work of the task force [on this issue] was completed but not presented to us is troubling," wrote Justices Dorit Beinisch, Esther Hayut and Yosef Elon. They also decided that a hearing on the electricity cuts will be held during the second half of January, 2008. Four weeks ago, the court ordered the State Prosecutor's Office to present further data on four points: details of a meeting between a Liaison Office representative and Palestinian Authority officials on how the power cuts would affect Gaza's population; information about how a new transformer that will soon be brought to Gaza from Egypt w Advertisement ill affect electrical production in the strip; details about Gaza's electricity infrastructure, with a focus on the veracity of the claim that the Palestinians will be able to divert power from nonessential functions to avert humanitarian suffering; and details about the four cables, out of a total of 10 that carry electricity from Israel to Gaza, that will be used to reduce the electrical supply to the strip by five percent. Last week, however, the state informed the court that there was a problem with the data sent to the justices, and that in fact, the electrical current to Gaza had been reduced to 330 amperes, from 400, on two cables as far back as January 2007 ¬ in accordance with an agreement with the Palestinians dating from 2005. "Such an adjustment substantively alters the data presented to the court," the justices wrote Tuesday.
