World News in Brief

Turkish police thwarted a bomb attack in Istanbul yesterday, arresting a 25-year-old man with explosives in his backpack outside a subway station, the city's governor said. The man was carrying more than 3 kilograms (7 pounds) of plastic A-4 explosives when he was arrested in the Sisli district, one of the most crowded areas of the city, Turkish news agencies reported. Governor Muammer Guler said it was certain that the man was planning to carry out a bomb attack, but that police had not yet determined the intended target. (AP)

Four members of a French family were killed by gunmen during a robbery in eastern Mauritania yesterday, police said. The four were robbed at gunpoint and then sprayed with automatic weapons fire, said Mohamed Ould Lemine, the police chief of the town of Aleg. The dead include two children. The father is seriously injured and is being treated at a nearby hospital, said Lemine. The family had stopped on the side of the highway to have a picnic when the gunmen approached them, demanding money and opening fire with automatic weapons. (AP)

At least five people were killed yesterday when a 12-story residential building collapsed in Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria, a security source said. Rescue workers pulled the five bodies from the rubble and dug out two survivors, but as many as 30 other people remained buried and authorities expected the death toll to rise. Abdel Maguid Selim, director of Alexandria security, told reporters construction workers had been doing repairs on the first floor when the building suddenly tilted and collapsed. (Reuters)
