The Tel Aviv District Court on Monday sentenced Isabella Balfer, 69, to six years in prison and an 18-month suspended term for kidnapping her 10-year-old granddaughter.

Balfer was convicted two months ago of conspiring with her daughter, Marina, to take the child to Russia against the father's will.

When Marina divorced her husband, their daughter was prevented from leaving Israel. The order was suspended in the summer of 2001 after Marina requested permission to take her daughter to the U.S. to visit her sister who was about to give birth.

The three continued to Russia and have not returned to Israel since, but the defendant was detained while trying to enter the country on a visit.

Judge Oded Mudrik said that she was "fully informed of her daughter's intention to deceive the court.
