Hundreds of students hold mock 'funeral' for education in J'lem

Roughly 300 university students took part in a mock "funeral" service for the higher education system across from the Education Ministry in Jerusalem on Tuesday.

The senior lecturers' strike is on its ninth week, with two-thirds of the scheduled semester having already passed. The students held a moment of silence and read eulogies for the university semester, which university heads say may be canceled. They demanded that the government end the senior lecturers' strike with a respectable agreement for the lecturers.

The students held signs reading, "Let us go back to studying with respect," condemning the Finance Ministry and the increasing privatization of the education system.

"We call on the government today to quit with the excuses, to stop the continous negotiations, to stop the option of managing a battle on the students' backs," said Shlomo Levy, Hebrew University's student union head.

A student from Bar-Ilan University read aloud passages from her diary during the strike, describing her hardships in attempting to finish the third and final year of her studies, calling out, "Enough, enough!"

Shlomit Atzaba, a spokeswoman for the Hebrew University student union, said that 60 students had already asked the university to cancel their registration and requested their tuition payments in return.

"All the requests came in the last two weeks," she said, "so if someone is asking themselves 'where is the students' threshold of despair'- we've already passed it."

On Wednesday, the National Student Union, which is made up of student representatives from all universities, will meet to discuss the possibility that if the strike does not end by next week, the students themselves will shut down the campuses, increasing the severity of the strike.
