Last update - 16:35 17/12/2007 DNA from murder probe yields conviction in unrelated rape case By Haaretz Service Tags: DNA, Israel, Farhi, Flinner The Tel Aviv District Court convicted Eitan Farhi on Monday of aggravated rape and sodomy, basing its verdict on DNA evidence collected during the police investigation of an unrelated case, the 2006 slaying of lawyer Anat Flinner in Ramat Hasharon. Farhi was arrested after a DNA sample found at the scene of the rape matched DNA collected from Farhi in connection with the Ramat Hasharon murder. Police pursuing the Flinner case collected a wide range of DNA samples, including specimens from a number of local residents. Advertisement Farhi, who was also convicted Monday of obstructing a police investigation, robbery and assaulting a police officer, has since challenged the legality of the trial. He claimed to have been told that the samples would only be used in connection with Flinner's murder, and that any other use of evidence was strictly prohibited by law. However, the judges who presided over the case said on Monday that "Public interest was of top priority in this case. Not the virtual infringement of the suspect's rights." The judges added that were they to acquiesce to the demands of the suspect and acquit him, "he would have been free to repeat his actions and commit further crimes."
