Peace Now asks Egged to halt bus lines to illegal W. Bank outposts

The Peace Now movement on Wednesday asked the Egged bus company to halt all routes to illegal outposts in the West Bank and to immediately evacuate any bus stops in the area, Army Radio reported on Wednesday.

Peace Now General Secretary Yariv Oppenheimer made the movement's request in a letter to the company which was also sent on to Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz.

In the letter, Oppenheimer wrote that "the outposts in the [occupied] territories were built illegally, often on private land belonging to Paletsinian residents. This was without any ruling by the government on the matter, without any overall building plans, and without necessary permission."

"We were surprised to discover that despite its illegality, Egged chose to recognize the illegal outposts, to supply then with transport lines and even build bus stops on the spot, without the approval of the Civil Administration.

Egged responded to the letter by saying, "the company acts according to the directions of the transportation and defense ministries. If there are outposts in which civilians live and the Israel Defense Forces has not dismantled them, then from our perspective, life is being conducted there as usual and we are obligated to attend to them."

Civil Administration spokesman Tzidki Maman said, "in general, bus stops built illegally are treated by the Civil Administration as any other illegal construction. With regard to Egged bus lines stopping at unarranged stops, we stress that the matter is not the responsibility of the Civil Administration."

Maman added that in the past, whenever the Civil Administration asked Egged to halt illegal stops, the bus company responded positively
