Study: Number of needy asking for food has doubled last 5 years

The number of needy people who ask for food has doubled in the past five years according to the yearly poverty report released Wednesday by the humanitarian aid group Latet. The report stated that almost a quarter of the needy have contemplated suicide.

The report is based on three studies, data collected from 120 aid groups who receive food supplies from Latet and a survey of 500 people.

According to the study, the percentage of needy that received support for over a year has risen from 54 percent in 2002 to 65 percent this year. In 2007, a third of the needy experienced hunger ? a 16 percent drop from last year. However, 60 percent of the needy eat only two meals a day.

As poverty grows, the feelings of anguish have strengthened as well. Half of the needy do not believe they can escape their distressing situation, 66 percent said that they fear for their children's lives and almost a quarter said they contemplated suicide.

Despite the fact that poverty is worsening, for the first time in five years the Israelis did not rank poverty as one of the nation' highest priorities. The need for better education was rated first, followed by security and corruption. Poverty was only ranked fourth. The change in priorities among Israelis has led to a 12 percent drop in donations the past year.

Founder of Latet Gilles Darmon and its general manager Eran Weintrob said that along with the public's drop in concern towards poverty the purchasing power of the needy has also dropped.
