ADL, Venezuelan Jewish groups demand probe into police raid on center

The Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday demanded a formal investigation into a recent police raid on a Caracas Jewish community center, calling it "inexplicable and unjustifiable."

"We are outraged by the inexplicable raid on Club Hebraica and are deeply concerned that the Jewish community in Venezuela is once again the target of intimidation," said ADL National Chair, Glen S. Lewy. His stance was supported by ADL National Director, Abe Foxman, who said "Such tactics have no place in a democratic society where civility, liberty and social justice should prevail."

The December 1 raid on La Hebraica occurred shortly before a vote on constitutional changes proposed by President Hugo Chavez. Members of a police narcotics and terrorism unit reportedly forced open the center's main gate and searched the premises, but made no arrests.

In a November 2006 study it conducted on anti-Semitism in Venezuela, the ADL reported that the Jewish community is routinely the target of verbal intimidation in the government-sponsored media and government officials often blame Jews for some problems in Venezuelan society.

"It is troubling that anti-Semitism continues to be used as a political tool in your country," a letter to Chavez in response to the raid from the ADL said.

"We join the Confederacion de Asociaciones Israelitas de Venezuela (CAIV) in their denunciation of the raid as an unjustifiable act against the Venezuelan Jewish community. We join them in their call to investigate these acts which create unnecessary tensions between Venezuelan Jews and the Venezuelan government," the letter said.

The CAIV could not be reached for comment on the police reponse to its demand.
