Tourism Ministry to kick off plan to make sites accessible to disabled

The NIS 15 million project to make 20 tourism sites accessible to the disabled will kick off in the next few weeks.

The Tourism Ministry and the National Insurance Institute (NII) have formulated a three-year plan to allow people with a wide range of disabilities to visit tourist sites around the country.

Among the sites on the list are nature, historical and religious sites including national parks and museums. The first to take part will include Timna, Zippori, Tel Hai, Hurshat Tal, the Beit Yannai beach, Ein Fasha, and the Stalactite Cave.

A joint steering committee of the NII and ministry recently chose the sites to be worked on first. Work is scheduled to be completed by 2009, and will include removing obstacles and barriers, adapting the topography and parking, and adding signs and other aids.

NIS 4 million will be allocated by the end of this year, and another NIS 4 million in each of the next two years. Another NIS 1 million for each of the three years will come from the authorities responsible for the sites such as local authorities and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.

The committee is now discussing projects for the second stage of the project.

The ministry has already made dozens of sites accessible, including the Knights Halls in Acre, the Ashkelon National Park, the Gamla Nature Reserve, the Hula Nature Reserve, the Botanic Gardens in Jerusalem, museums and beaches.
