Poll: Israeli Arabs object to land swap

A large majority of Israel's Arabs object to Israeli-Palestinian negotiations over territory swaps (73 percent), a survey conducted by Mada al-Carmel - the Arab Center for Applied Social Research in Haifa - finds. Most Arabs also object to recognizing Israel as a Jewish state (65 percent) and renouncing the Right of Return (79 percent). Israeli Arabs also believe that the Palestinians cannot back down on Jerusalem-related issues, according to the poll. (Yoav Stern)

West Bank pullout protesters convicted

Two former West Bank settlers were yesterday convicted of a deliberate attempt to endanger human life, conspiring to commit a crime and obstructing justice. The brothers Mordechai and Elitzur Levinstein, who had been evacuated from Homesh and Yitzhar, had planned to block the Netivey Ayalon highway with vehicles and torch them to protest the evacuation. The Tel Aviv District Court yesterday ordered the brothers to remain detained until their verdict was issued. (Ofra Edelman)

Vatican: Palestinians have right to return

A Vatican official said yesterday that Palestinian refugees have the right to return to their homeland, and said he hoped Israeli-Palestinian peace talks would address the issue. Cardinal Renato Martino, who heads the Vatican's office for migrants, said the Annapolis agreement to restart peace talks was encouraging, and that he hoped by this time next year concrete measures would be under way. "It is my hope that all the parts of the problem are taken into consideration such as that of the Palestinian refugees, who like all other refugees, have the right to return to their homeland," Martino said. Israel seeking peace-lovers at UN

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Dan Gillerman, will try today to invest the international body with the "spirit of Annapolis." Speaking at a General Assembly session on the issue of Palestine, to mark the UN partition plan of November 29, 1947, Gillerman will call for delegates to form a "coalition of moderates for peace" to replace the hate-mongering by assembly representatives who perpetuate the past. Israel refrained from speaking at the last two annual sessions on Palestine, but decided to have Gillerman deliver a speech in light of the peace conference in Maryland. (Shlomo Shamir)

Ahmadinejad: Israel doomed to collapse

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said yesterday that the Annapolis conference was a failure and that Israel is doomed to collapse. "It is impossible that the Zionist regime will survive. Collapse is in the nature of this regime because it has been created on aggression, lying, oppression and crime," Ahmadinejad said, lashing out at the gathering that many saw as aimed at isolating Iran. "Soon, even the most politically doltish individuals will understand that this conference was a failure from the beginning," he said. (AP)
