Police clash with residents of southern Bedouin town of Rahat

Clashes between police and Rahat residents erupted Wednesday evening in the southern Bedouin town after a special forces team conducted a search in one of the houses.

Ibrahim Algabor, whose house was being searched, relayed that, "three hours ago a special police team came to my brother's house and searched for two hours, with no interferences. After they did not find anything, they asked us to sign the search warrant. At that moment, one of the police officers began taunting my brother."

Algabor maintains that because of the taunting, a fight broke out between the officers and the family, with the police spraying tear gas.

His brother, Iman Algabor, 26, was taken to Soroka hospital in Be'er Sheva for further medical assistance, where he was then arrested.

Police maintains that their special unit was sent to conduct a search of a house in Rahat, and was confronted with violence upon their arrival. In response to the rocks that were thrown at them, police say they sprayed mace. Police also said that more arrests were being made in the town.
