IAF strikes Hamas post in south Gaza city of Khan Yunis
By News Agencies
Tags: IDF, Gaza, Palestinians

The Israel Air Force attacked a Hamas post in Khan Yunis Tuesday, a few hours after the conclusion of the Annapolis summit. The attack came after a day of mortar shells fired at Israel, with some landing near the Kerem Shalom community.

An army source said that the attack was a response to Hamas' firing.

Earlier, a Qassam rocket landed in the Sha'ar Hanegev regional council. No injuries or damage was reported. In total, four Qassam rockets and four mortar shells were fired.

Four Palestinian militants were killed overnight between Monday and Tuesday in three separate clashes with the Israel Defense Forces in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas, which seized control of the coastal territory in June, said the two were killed near the Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza. An IDF spokeswoman said an outlook had spotted the two men as they approached a no-man's zone adjacent to the border fence, presumably to plant an explosive device. An IAF assault helicopter was summoned and the two men were gunned down.

Before dawn, IDF troops shot at a militant crawling toward them in the southern Gaza Strip, near the Sufa border crossing.

In a similar incident shortly after, another armed Palestinian was shot as he approached the border fence. A second man was seriously wounded, and was taken by the IDF to Be'er Sheva for medical treatment.

Israel has stepped up air strikes and military incursions since the Islamist Hamas movement took control of the Gaza Strip. Militants often launch rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza into southern Israel.

On Monday, at least three militants were killed in Gaza in two separate Israeli strikes. In the first incident, an Israel Air Force aircraft launched a missile strike on militants at a mortar launching pad in the northern town of Beit Hanun. One militant was wounded in the incident and at least one other was killed.

An IDF spokeswoman said the missile targeted militants who had launched two mortar shells at Israel shortly before, and identified hitting them.

Witnesses said an IAF missile was fired in the northern part of the territory near a key crossing with Israel. Most Palestinian rocket and mortar attacks against Israel originate in the north of the strip.

Hamas identified the militants as members of the group.

In the second incident, which occurred near the Erez Crossing, two other militants were killed by IDF fire on the ground. The two were suspected of preparing an explosive device targeting IDF troops patrolling the area.

Israel has placed its security forces on high alert, saying that Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups may try to disrupt the Annapolis conference by carrying out deadly high-profile attacks against Israeli targets.
