Rightists target mainstream to fight concessions at Annapolis
By Nadav Shragai, Haaretz Correspondent

On the eve of the Annapolis peace summit, right-wing activists are being forced to contend with defeatism as well as internal disputes in their efforts to block territorial concessions to the Palestinians.

The first hurdle in the paths of organizations like the New Yesha Council and One Jerusalem is the disillusionment in right-wing circles in the wake of the disengagement. Having failed to prevent the pullout from the Gaza Strip in 2005, right-wing activists and supporters are apparently less willing to come out and protest - as demonstrated in internal polls commissioned by right-wing parties.

If anything, Danny Dayan's New Yesha Council is even more faithful to the principles that guided its precursor before the pullout. Those principles state that the only way to preserve the settlements is through the hearts of non-settlers from Tel Aviv, Haifa and Holon. That, according to the New Yesha Council, is the best way to settle the settler question.

Against this backdrop, right-wing activists staged a laser show on Sunday in Jerusalem's Arab neighborhoods (adjacent to Jewish residences). It was put on to demonstrate the proximity of Jewish houses to the Arab apartments, which could one day serve as sniper lookouts and rocket-launching pads.

The central propaganda channels are practical, security-oriented and not so ideological. A demonstration outside Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's residence in Jerusalem scheduled for Monday was also apparently to target the broad common denominator, rather than preaching to the ideologically-motivated choir.

Other extra-parliamentary groups like Homesh First opt for a hands-on approach on the ground, including repeated attempts to rebuild the abandoned West Bank settlement after which the organization is named, as well as other evacuated West Bank outposts.

Last Saturday, Homesh saw another delegation of some 50 activists. On Monday, it will see hundreds more, who will pay their respects to Ido Zoldan - the settler who was killed in a terrorist attack last week.

Young settlers are in the habit of clashing with security forces on a weekly basis around outposts like Shevut Ami. The officers evict the settlers from these venues time and time again, but they keep returning.

These clashes leave both the settlers and the police wounded, but the media rarely report about this. Right-wing Web sites, by contrast, are full of reports about these incidents.

The concept guiding the anti-institutional line alleges that public recognition is unnecessary for the struggle against territorial concessions, and that ideology should be the main catalyst for the protesters' actions.

So far, the two schools of thought within the settler society - institutional and anti-institutional - are cooperating on the parliamentary front. They are trying to implement one of the lessons of the failure to prevent the pullout: the recognition that the real decision will be made in the legislative arena. For that reason, the Yesha council and other rightist bodies are mobilizing a Knesset lobby aimed at promoting anti-concession legislation.
