Police: Man staged car crash to cover up murder of two wives, daughter

The State Prosecution said Sunday that a resident of East Jerusalem will be charged with killing his two wives and daughter, and staging a car crash to cover up the murder. Another daughter was severely injured in the incident.

Police say the suspect, Naif Abu Sarkhan of the Arab neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber, drove from the Dead Sea to Jerusalem with his family on October 9.

In the northern Dead Sea area the car went over a cliff, and the three fell 50 meters to their death, while the other girl sustained severe injuries. Abu Sarkhan emerged unscathed, and had won praise for donating his family's organs for medical use. (For more, watch Haaretz.com TV)

Abu Sarkhan was questioned by police, and maintained the accident occurred after a family trip in the Eid Gedi area. He said that about 200 meters ahead of the site of the accident a green bus was signaling and beeping, forcing him to clear the lane.

He told police that the bus hit his car, causing him to lose control over his vehicle.

Expert reports and new police information cast doubt on his version. Jerusalem police chief, Major General Shalom Ka'atbi, appointed a special investigation squad for the event, which was composed of several police officers and a lawyer. A comprehensive gag order on the affair was imposed.

During the undercover investigation it emerged that the suspect intended to kill his wives and daughters, so that he can make use of their life insurance funds and marry another woman.

Abu Sarkhan was summoned for a second interrogation on November 4, where he denied the allegations and adhered to his original statement. Confronted with the results of the reconstruction of the so-called accident staged by police, which were at odds with his version of the event, he backtracked on his original deposition.

He now claimed that he pulled over to check the car boot, but left his car in first gear, causing the car to roll down.

Following these developments, his remand was twice extended.

The indictment will be submitted to the Jerusalem District Court on Sunday, with a police request for a further extension of the suspect's remand.

Chief Superintendent Eli Mekmel, head of Judea and Samaria Police District, said: "This is a complicated investigation? which was carried out with the utmost sensitivity, (because) on top of the terrible grief caused to the family and the revelation that this was a murder in question, the suspect donated the organs of the deceased. Therefore, there was an obligation to keep the matter secret, also for the benefit of the families of the transplant patients."
