France bestows top honors on family of Nazi hunters
By The Associated Press
Tags: France, Nicolas Sarkozy, Nazi

French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Friday awarded the country's top honors to a Nazi hunter and her son.

Beate Klarsfeld was made an Officer in the Legion of Honor - an award already given to her husband Serge, the country's best-known Nazi hunter - in recognition of her tenacious search for war criminals, some of whom operated in France during World War II.

"Germany and France are lucky to have you as a daughter," Sarkozy told the German-born Klarsfeld, 68.

Her son Arno was named Knight in France's National Order of Merit.

He notably represented the Sons and Daughters of Deported Jews of France in the 1998 trial of Nazi-era collaborator Maurice Papon, a former French budget minister convicted of complicity in crimes against humanity.

Arno Klarsfeld also worked closely with Sarkozy when he was interior minister, notably dealing with immigrant families who were in France illegally but had children in French schools.
