Israir flight attendants unionize, citing 'humiliating work conditions'
By Zohar Blumenkranz, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: labor union

The Histadrut labor federation announced Sunday that airline company Israir's flight attendants are unionizing for the first time and demanding the company offer them a collective contract.

The workers maintain that the demand for the collective agreement comes after employment conditions have worsened. The chairman for transportation workers in the Histadrut promised "to act for the flight attendants with all means that are at our disposal."

Israir's flight attendants decided to join the Histadrut union after repeated complaints over their "humiliating working conditions," including, "sleeping on the plane floor, lower salary than minimum wage, and their own personal payment for their training."

After the Histadrut was made aware of the shameful conditions, they announced they would provide their services for Israir flight attendants and demand from the company's management a collective work contract.

Both El-Al and Arkia flying companies offer their employees collective agreements.
