Palestinian police sweep West Bank refugee camp
By Avi Issacharoff, Haaretz Correspondent
tags: Balata refugee camp, Nablus

Palestinian security forces operating in Nablus arrested several members of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades in the Balata refugee camp Wednesday night. Palestinian police have also arrested a number of persons suspected of criminal activities, or for holding weapons without authorization.

All operations are coordinated with the IDF.

Among those arrested Wednesday night is Faizi Tirawi, one of the leaders of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs in the refugee camp. His brother, Jamal, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, is held by Israel.

Also in coordination with the IDF, the Palestinian security forces carried out an operation in the nearby village of Asira al-Shimaliya, which resulted in the arrest of members of Hamas and Fatah, and suspects in criminal activities.

Most of those arrested were transferred to the prison in Jericho, an operation that was also carried out in coordination with Israel.

Residents of Nablus expressed their satisfaction with the operations involving Palestinian security forces trying to restore law and order in the city. They pointed to the obvious calm and the absence of gunmen and stolen vehicles.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayad visited Nablus Wednesday, accompanied by General Keith Dayton, U.S. security coordinator in the territories, and U.S. Consul General in East Jerusalem Jake Wales.

Wales told the local media that the United States intends to transfer $1.3 million to assist Nablus, restore educational institutions and government offices in the city.
