Police raid 20 locations across Israel as part of Olmert probe

Police raided locations across Israel on Sunday morning, searching for evidence in three criminal investigations against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

More than 100 investigators arrived at over 20 different places around the country, including government offices, public buildings, private businesses and residential homes.

"Police investigators are searching a number of government and private offices in connection with three ongoing investigations into Olmert," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

The searches were expected to last throughout the morning, possibly longer, he added.

Among the places were were the Industry and Trade Ministry, Israel Lands Administration offices, Postal Authority offices and the Jerusalem City Hall.

Investigators were hunting documents relating to the investigations into Olmert's purchase of his Jerusalem home, and alleged political appointments by Olmert through the Small Business Authority and the Industry and Trade Ministry.

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz last month ordered the third concurrent investigation into Olmert on suspicion he granted improper political favors while serving as industry and trade minister between 2003 and 2005.

In a different case, the prime minister was questioned by police twice over suspicions that during his tenure as finance minister he tried to rig the sale of Israel's second-largest bank, Leumi, in favor of two associates.

Olmert is also suspected of buying a Jerusalem home from a real estate developer at a substantial discount in return for helping the builder obtain construction permits from Jerusalem authorities.

A Justice Ministry statement said that the newest investigation will probe new suspicions of:

  • Alleged cronyism by Olmert while he headed an investment center operated by the Industry and Trade Ministry
  • Alleged political appointments by Olmert via the Small Business Authority
  • Alleged political appointments by Olmert throughout the Industry and Trade Ministry
