(Reuters) del.icio.us Digg It!  new Last update - 17:27 31/10/2007 German FM to present Israel, PA with EU plan for Mideast peace By The Associated Press tags: Israel, Germany  German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayad on Wednesday to present a European Union plan for boosting U.S.-led Mideast peace efforts. Under the plan devised by Steinmeier, the EU would try to strengthen small and mid-sized Palestinian businesses, West Bank universities, the police and other institutions. During his two day trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories, Steinmeier also plans to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, as well as his Israeli and Palestinian counterparts, Tzipi Livni and Riad Malki. Advertisement Steinmeier first presented the plan, billed as a European contribution to the current U.S.-led peace efforts, in an op-ed piece in a German newspaper two weeks ago. It has since been approved at an EU foreign ministers' meeting. The U.S. is trying to organize a Mideast peace conference later this fall in Annapolis, Maryland. Israel and the Palestinians are trying to write a joint document that would address the core issue of their conflict and be presented at the conference. The gathering is to relaunch Israeli-Palestinian peace talks that broke down in January.
