Egypt police: Gazans caught in tunnel members of Army of Islam

Three Palestinians arrested earlier this month in a secret border
tunnel linking Gaza and Egypt are members of Army of Islam, an Al-Qaida-inspired group that had planned to carry out suicide attacks in Israel, a police official said Tuesday.

A fourth man was believed to have escaped back to Gaza. One of the three arrested, Youssef, was wearing a suicide belt at the time of the police raid on the tunnel.

The Palestinian militant group Army of Islam previously held kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit who was abducted in a cross-border raid in June 2006. Last July, the group transferred him to Hamas' control, without explanation. The group also claimed responsibility for the kidnapping in Gaza kidnapping in Gaza of BBC British journalist Alan Johnston. Johnston was released in July after more than 100 days in captivity.

The group of smugglers was believed to be contact with an Egyptian driver who was to drive the men to central Sinai, from where they were to make their way to Israel to carry out suicide attacks in a coastal Israeli city, the official said, without providing more details.

The Palestinians were arrested in a tunnel south of the Rafah border crossing at Al-Dohnia, as they were making their way from Gaza to Egypt. Palestinian smugglers frequently bring weapons and contraband into the Gaza Strip through tunnels, prompting Israel to complain that Egypt does not do enough to stop the trade.

Egypt has rejected the allegations but recently said it would make a greater effort to crack down on trafficking and is publicizing all the tunnels and weapons it discovers.
