Indictment issued against suspects in kidnapping of German immigrant
By Ofra Edelman, Haaretz Correspondent

An indictment was issued Monday against two men suspected of kidnapping a German immigrant last February. The court also received a request for the suspects' remands to be extended until their trial.

The indictment includes charges of kidnapping with the extent to extort money, unlawful imprisonment, extortion, and aggravated robbery.

The defendants, Yosef Peleg, 48, of Azur and Erez Dahan, 38, from Jerusalem are suspected of kidnapping Rafael Angel, 30, a new immigrant from Germany and holding him captive for two weeks until his father paid them $320,000.

During his ordeal, Angel was abducted, beaten and humiliated by his captors, who moved him from one hiding place to another in the Jerusalem and Tel Aviv areas. During that time, his only contact with the outside world was the conversations he had with his father about the ransom demanded, and he was under constant watch.

The indictment reportedly details how Angel's kidnappers repeatedly beat and stabbed him, put out cigarettes on his body and gouged their fingers in his eyes during his captivity. In addition, the indictment states that when Angel's father came from Germany to meet with the kidnappers about the ransom, they beat him severely and robbed him of $5,000.

The indictment also alleges that the two defendants were involved in two additional kidnappings and Police investigators have stated that they expect additional arrests to result from the affair.

According to Erez Dahan's attorney, Ronen Levy, the entire incident was a civil dispute over a business partnership involving Angel. "In any event there is no connection to my client, and he doesn't understand how his name got mixed up in it. I don't understand why the complainant waited so long to go to the police."

The police said in response that the claims of a civil dispute were investigated "and found to be baseless." Peleg also denied the accusations against him
